In a nutshell: An intentional Robinson Crusoe experience. Sustainability-focused beachfront bungalows capture island magic and sea breeze. Watch the sunrise, practice yoga, treat yourself to a massage, or enjoy cocktails at the beach bar.
The story: The owners were inspired by traditional Thai design and a sustainable approach to island tourism. Koh Lipe is true paradise, with a dizzying array of tropical fish on your doorstep, soft white sand beneath your feet, islands to explore from your kayak, delicious food and friendly staff.
The details: Inspired by Thai architecture, all bungalows are built from locally-sourced hardwoods, with the structure designed to catch the ocean winds (note that the bungalows do not have AC). Supplied water containers are refilled daily, and we loved the hammocks on each porch. The one restaurant serves delicious food, and the morning breakfast spread was always a treat. Make sure to check out happy hour at the beach bar.

Castaway Resort sits on the small Southern Thai island of Koh Lipe, part of Tarutao National Marine Park. The bungalows are located on Sunrise Beach, which is a quieter stretch of sand (save for the local longtail boats). Waking up to crystal clear water and brilliant sunrises was a dream. You're still within a stone's throw of Walking Street, with its many bars and restaurants.
The journey to Koh Lipe makes you feel as though you've truly earned your holiday (and let's face it, the best places are the hardest to reach). The easiest route (reducing time spent on a bumpy ferry) is to fly from Bangkok to Hat Yai, organise a transfer to Pak Ba Ra Pier, and hop on a 1.5 hour ferry to the island.
