THAT GREEK ISLAND FEELING - Part 1/5 🇬🇷: Santorini (save for later)

This little series is my love letter to the Greek islands and how they make me feel. Capturing their essence is akin to bottling lightening, but hopefully this allows you to feel something similar to the real thing - whether that’s contentment, peace, joy, awe, or relief that beautiful corners of the world still exist.

Starting off strong with the most famous island of them all. Touristy? Yes. Overpriced? Definitely. However, this island remains popular for a reason - and is absolutely magical.

Santorini sits next to a caldera that is vast and alluring. Swimming in these thermal waters is a nourishing experience, as is going off the beaten track to less flashy spots and enjoying the island for its soul.

One of my favourite moments was on a fishing boat with my family, anchored in the heart of the caldera. Sunbaked and salty, we savoured freshly caught and grilled fish, paired with our local captain’s homemade tomato fritters - true contentment.

Takayama // discover the magic of Takayama, an Edo-period town nestled in the Japanese Alps 🇯🇵🌿

I fell in love with its beautifully preserved streets, cozy sake breweries, family-run tea shops and incredible Hida craftsmanship.

Although slowly appearing on more “off the beaten path” Japan itineraries, Takayama has managed to maintain its old-world charm (and doesn’t yet suffer from Kyoto’s overtourism).

Don’t miss:
• The many sake breweries, including Hirata, Kawashiri and Funasaka - due to the colder climate, Takayama sake is famous for its use of pure mountain water
• Showa Kan Museum - a retro museum allowing you to explore incredible sets depicting Japanese life in the 20th century

Japanese Onsen // After a few days in Tokyo, we took the Shinkansen to Gunma Prefecture for a quiet New Year’s escape.

@takaragawa_onsen_osenkaku is a traditional ryokan set in the mountains by a river. We spent one night enjoying the hot springs and surrounding nature. The onsen has three public, mixed-use baths, making it a great option for couples or friends.

The stay includes use of Yukatas (traditional robes), a kaiseki dinner, and transport from Jomokogen Station. I can’t say I’m a futon-convert, but the experience as a whole was exactly what we needed. If you’re looking for a more authentic side of Japan, this is definitely worth considering.

Japanese Onsen // After a few days in Tokyo, we took the Shinkansen to Gunma Prefecture for a quiet New Year’s escape.

@takaragawa_onsen_osenkaku is a traditional ryokan set in the mountains by a river. We spent one night enjoying the hot springs and surrounding nature. The onsen has three public, mixed-use baths, making it a great option for couples or friends.

The stay includes use of Yukatas (traditional robes), a kaiseki dinner, and transport from Jomokogen Station. I can’t say I’m a futon-convert, but the experience as a whole was exactly what we needed. If you’re looking for a more authentic side of Japan, this is definitely worth considering.

Back in March, I took a solo trip to Japan where I explored Tokyo’s bustling streets, experienced Kanazawa’s timeless beauty, saw Hiroshima’s resilience, felt Osaka’s vibrant energy, and enjoyed Kyoto’s serenity. 🌿
